Addressing Addiction and Mental Health Disorders in the Legal Profession The evidence is disturbingly clear. A recent study by the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation found rates of substance abuse among American attorneys to be more than twice that of the national average. Rates of mental health disorders are even higher. Yet, while attorneys are over-represented in rates of alcohol and other drug addiction, legal professionals are profoundly under-represented in rates of those seeking treatment.
