The nature of substance use has changed dramatically since Dan G. began his career in addiction counseling 14 years ago. "When I started, I didn't have many patients with opioid dependence—maybe a couple a year," he says. "Fast forward to today, and it's not unusual for half my group to be addicted to heroin or other opioids." Dan, a counselor at Hazelden in Plymouth, can attest to the destructive impact of substance use of any kind. But there's something different about opioids. People with opioid addiction tend to have the highest rates of failure to complete treatment, of relapse and of death from overdose. "Individuals dependent on opioids face unique challenges that can undermine their ability to remain in treatment," Dan says, "putting them at greater risk of relapse." New opioid treatment approach makes a dramatic difference Four years ago, we introduced a new treatment approach designed to offer a better chance for recovery from opioid addictions. COR-12™ (Comprehensive Opioid Response with the Twelve Steps) is an innovative program that gives our patients the gift of time and saves lives. COR-12 combines the use of certain medications with our world-class Twelve Step facilitation model to help patients manage the physical challenges of opioid withdrawal and give them the time they need to regain health and hope and learn vital recovery skills. The medications decrease cravings—and don't interfere with the patient's ability to lead a fully functional life. "I was skeptical at first," says Dan, who was not completely comfortable about using prescription drugs as part of the treatment plan. "But now I'm wholeheartedly on board. It really works—and that's what it's all about." "Some of the best people I know have fallen prey to this disease," he adds. "At the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, we treat it better than anywhere else I know of. I've worked at other places—the miracles are few and far between. My experience here is that miracles happen frequently." Your dollars save lives Help us fight the battle against addiction to alcohol and other drugs with your donation.
