Institutional Review Board

Institutional Review Board (IRB) review consists of a thorough and ongoing evaluation of the risks and benefits of the study by a group of trained scientists and non-scientists who are not otherwise involved in the research project.

Before any individual is able to begin conducting human subjects research, the study MUST first be reviewed and approved by the appropriate IRB.

For research that is related to the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation (if it is being conducted on an Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation site, with Hazelden Betty Ford patients, former patients, staff or students from the Graduate School, etc.), you will require approval from the Butler Center for Research IRB before you begin ANY research-related activities (including recruitment).

If you have any questions about protocol writing, submission, or the IRB review process, please do not hesitate to contact an IRB staff person via email at or via telephone at 651-213-4060.
