Learn about addiction treatment for substance use disorders directly from clinicians, patients and families in this immersive, weeklong educational program.

The Education of a Lifetime

Often described by participants as "a life-changing experience," the Summer Institute for Medical Students program is designed to educate your heart and mind.

By shadowing addiction treatment patients and family program participants, you will gain extraordinary insight into the dynamics of addiction and the process of healing. Your week will include:
  • Classroom instruction
  • Clinical observation
  • Integration into patient life

Specifically for Medical Students

Substance use disorders are arguably the nation's leading health problem. Our intensive educational program prepares you to effectively address all aspects of the disease in your medical practice, from assessment to treatment to recovery issues. Lecture topics include:
  • Bio-psycho-social-spiritual aspects of the disease of addiction
  • Evidence-based and holistic approaches to care
  • Twelve Step recovery principles and practices

  • Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, California
  • Hazelden in Center City, Minnesota

When to Apply

  • Applications are accepted annually December 1 through March 1
  • Acceptance is announced April 1.

Program Cost

Thanks to the generosity of Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation donors, the Summer Institute for Medical Students program is offered at no cost to qualifying applicants. Travel and lodging expenses are also provided for students through a scholarship fund.
