I didn't want to leave my family to go to treatment, but I knew I had to get healthy. My kids knew, too. They wanted their old mom back.

Hazelden Betty Ford in St. Paul, Minnesota

Conveniently located just west of downtown St. Paul, our outpatient drug rehab and mental health facility serves individuals, chosen families and the greater recovery community

Why Outpatient Addiction Treatment?

Raising children. Earning a living. Cooking, cleaning and paying utility bills. Life's everyday responsibilities don't magically disappear when you begin a drug addiction treatment program. And yet, effective drug rehab requires all-out commitment, careful attention and new ways of living that take focus, practice and patience.

Our outpatient substance use treatment programs equip you with the knowledge, skills, accountability and support to successfully navigate both worlds, simultaneously. Hazelden Betty Ford in St. Paul offers three levels of outpatient treatment for substance abuse as well as specialty programs.

Day Treatment

Our day treatment program, often referred to as partial hospitalization, gives you the highest outpatient level of care. With a treatment plan tailored to address your unique situation and struggles, day treatment incorporates educational and therapeutic sessions designed to help you build and strengthen:

  • Coping skills
  • Resilience
  • Accountability
  • Initiative

To ensure comprehensive and personalized care, clinicians at our outpatient treatment center integrate and align mental health services to address anxiety, depression or other co-occurring disorders that often accompany substance abuse.

For added support and focus, you have the option of living on our St. Paul campus during outpatient treatment. It's a warm and welcoming sober-living community where you will feel safe and supported as you gain ground in recovery.

Day treatment programming is an ideal substance abuse treatment level if you:

  • Have experienced a recent relapse
  • Are transitioning out of an inpatient or residential drug or alcohol addiction treatment program
  • Actively struggle with a co-occurring mental health disorder, such as anxiety or depression

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our weekday and weekend intensive outpatient treatment programs meet conveniently during the morning or evening so you can continue to manage work and family responsibilities while participating in drug rehab. To best meet your schedule, both in-person and virtual treatment options are available. When beginning our intensive outpatient rehab program, you will typically be scheduled for four sessions a week that meet for three hours a day. As clinical milestones are met, you'll attend less frequently.

In IOP, you will work with the same addiction counselor throughout the course of treatment rather than change counselors at different stages or phases along the way. This "one counselor" approach provides you with attentive and individualized continuity of care.

Our on-site, clinically supervised sober living program is also available to you as an intensive outpatient treatment program patient. Especially during early recovery, living in a supportive environment can make all the difference in terms of accountability, motivation and connection.

Specialty Programs

Outpatient Opioid Addiction Treatment

Opioid use disorder brings unique challenges and difficulties that can potentially undermine your engagement in rehab. With a comprehensive and individualized approach, our evidence-based opioid addiction rehab program incorporates special-focus group sessions, educational workshops and, if clinically determined, the use of medication-assisted treatment to ease the discomfort of withdrawal and reduce cravings.

LGBTQIA+ Outpatient Addiction Treatment

Our clinicians are attentive to the addiction rehab and recovery support needs of the LGBTQIA+ community. People who identify as LBGTQIA+ have higher rates of substance use disorder than the population as a whole, due in part to societal stigma and related trauma.

With an affirming, compassionate and inclusive approach, our special-focus LGBTQIA+ programming addresses issues that can interfere with recovery.

Outpatient Mental Health Services

In addition to substance abuse rehab services, our outpatient drug rehab center offers numerous in-person and virtual mental health counseling services to address issues related to anxiety, grief, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health conditions.

Services for mental health issues are available to the general community (not just our addiction treatment program patients) and include individual appointments as well as couples and family counseling. We offer wide range of special-focus groups (some in-person, some virtual), including:

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Coping Skills
  • Body Image
  • Grief and Loss
  • Female-Identifying Resiliency
  • Male-Identifying Resiliency
  • Chronic Pain
  • Healthy Sexuality in Recovery
  • LGBTQIA+ Resiliency

Virtual Teen Intervene Screening and Brief Intervention

Has your teenager been caught using marijuana or other drugs? Or maybe they've admitted to drinking or vaping with other underage friends. Chances are you're not facing a full-blown, addiction diagnosis, but some type of intervention is needed.

Our virtual Teen Intervene program is a three-session counselor/teen one-to-one program that guides young people in examining why they've chosen to use alcohol or drugs and how they can make healthier choices in the future. Teen Intervene also involves parent education, support and guidance.

Help and Healing for Families Affected by Addiction

Through our Family Programs, support groups and family counseling, you and your loved ones can learn how to work through the difficulties you've experienced due to substance abuse, recognize the importance of setting healthy boundaries, and begin to rebuild trusting relationships with one another.

Many of our family services are free and available to the general community. And many are provided virtually so you and your loved ones can access support from wherever you live--in Minnesota or beyond.

Two virtual groups available to families in Minnesota are:

  • Families Affected by Addiction - Designed for adults who are the key support person for a loved one with substance use disorder; incorporates Al-Anon themes, group therapy and emotional connectedness
  • Recovery Relationships - Designed for couples to learn together about the impact of addiction on relationships; focuses on healthy communication skills to repair and strengthen relationships.

The Families Affected by Addiction virtual support group is available to adults 18+ years of age. Here, you’ll find support, connection and a confidential place to share similar experiences being a significant other to someone with an alcohol or drug problem. The group meets every Thursday from 6-7 p.m. Getting started begins with a mental health assessment. Call 1-855-348-7022 to get started.
