Inpatient Addiction Treatment

Adults 18 years of age and older come to the Betty Ford Center for treatment because their life under the influence of alcohol and/or other drugs has become unmanageable. Our Inpatient Program provides a thorough clinical and medical assessment, detoxification, and primary treatment services. Patients live in gender-specific residence halls on a private, safe and secure 20-acre campus, located in Rancho Mirage, California. Inpatient Treatment may be recommended for individuals who require a prolonged detoxification and/or require stabilization.

What Is Inpatient Rehab Like?

After stabilization, each patient is assigned a treatment team, which includes a physician, nurse, psychologist, primary counselor, case manager, spiritual care counselor, family counselor, dietitian, fitness trainer, and chemical dependency technician. This team is responsible for assessing and working with each patient to establish an individualized plan of care and post-treatment recommendations designed to support ongoing recovery. Upon completion of treatment, patients will possess a better understanding of the disease of addiction, and recognize the necessity and importance of Twelve Step involvement.

After patients are stabilized, each day consists of a full schedule of treatment activities. These activities include, but are not limited to, individual therapy, specialty groups, fitness, educational lectures, and group therapy, which is the core of treatment at the Betty Ford Center.

During their stay, all patients develop a foundation in Twelve Step recovery and gain the necessary tools to enhance the progress made during treatment. Additionally, family members and loved ones are encouraged to participate in the Center's Family Program and Children's Program.

The end of treatment in Rancho Mirage marks the beginning of a partnership with Betty Ford Center alumni. Chapters and individuals around the world continue to support patients, their family and friends in their new lives of recovery.

Some patients may decide to extend their stay beyond our residential treatment program. Betty Ford Center recognizes long-term treatment as the "Gold Standard" for care and our research shows that the longer a patient stays in treatment, the better the outcome.

Pain Management Program

Integrated Pain Management and Addiction Treatment

The Betty Ford Center offers a unique chronic pain management and addiction treatment program that goes well beyond the traditional approach of symptom relief.

The Pain Management Program is available to those who have co-morbid pain in addition to substance use disorder. Untreated pain can often lead to relapse as the same abnormalities in the brain that cause addiction also cause chronic pain.

People who use alcohol and other drugs to cope with chronic pain enter our treatment in a state of chronic stress. We help them relearn how to focus and how to de-stress through non-pharmacological pain management techniques.

Our treatment paradigm is called Neurocognitive Enhancement and includes:

  • A comprehensive evaluation
  • Group process
  • Chronic stress management
  • Manual treatments as indicated by a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (consists of external osteopathic manipulations)
  • Qi Gong / therapeutic movement group
  • Guided mindfulness and meditation
  • Acupuncture services provided by a Registered Nurse (Masters level trained in Oriental Medicine)
  • Individualized fitness program

Professionals Treatment Program

Addiction Treatment for Working Professionals

The disease of addiction does not discriminate; anyone can be an addict or alcoholic. However, because professionals with a substance abuse disorder are likely to return to their profession after treatment, there are a number of important issues that need to be explored and addressed during treatment. Examples include:

  • Shame reduction
  • Peer support
  • Bridging the gap - professionalism in early sobriety
  • Return to work readiness and advocacy
  • Post-treatment continuing care and relapse prevention
  • Therapeutic monitoring

The Betty Ford Center's Professionals Treatment Program was originally developed to address the therapeutic needs of those medical professionals seeking treatment for substance dependence who - after dedicating years of their lives to healing others - have found themselves in the grip of a disease process they cannot cure, or even arrest, without help.

Our overwhelmingly positive experiences with medical professionals, both during and after treatment, have enabled us to establish an optimal standard of care for any professional whose responsibilities have the potential of affecting the safety, well being and livelihood of others. Besides medical professionals, these individuals include airline pilots, business owners and executives, attorneys, clergy, professional athletes and members of the entertainment industry.

What are the Components of Professionals Treatment Program?

In addition to being in daily primary group with peers, each patient in our Professionals Treatment Program receives ongoing medical, psychiatric and psychological care, individual counseling, a weekly progress review and three intensive three-day workshops on trauma, codependency and relapse prevention.

The Professionals Treatment Program team (with the patient’s permission), will be in regular contact with family members, the professional’s referent or employer, post-treatment care providers, monitoring agency, worksite monitors and if needed - their legal counsel.

If you or someone you know would benefit from our Professionals Treatment Program, please call our Admissions Department at 1-800-434-7365 for a free, confidential assessment with an Admissions counselor.

If you prefer, you can speak with a member of our Professionals Treatment Program Team.

Young Adult Recovery Program

Rehab for Teens and College Students (ages 18-25)

The Betty Ford Center's Young Adult Recovery Program is designed to meet the unique treatment needs of young women and men ages 18-25, who are financially dependent upon their parents or other family members. Each patient is assessed by our clinical team to determine the appropriate length of stay.

What are the components of the Young Adult Recovery Program?

This program provides enhanced treatment activities to meet the unique development and gender needs of young adults such as 24-hour tech supervision, experiential outings, specialized fitness and movie night. Patients focus on their recovery through the development of independent sober living skills and work on becoming self-sufficient through setting goals such as financial independence and career/educational goals.

What is different in our Young Adult Recovery Program?

Each patient is assigned a treatment team consisting of a physician, nurse, psychologist, primary counselor, case manager, spiritual care counselor, family counselor, dietician, fitness trainer, chemical dependency technician and focused continuing care specialist. This team is responsible for working with each patient to establish an individualized plan of care and recommendations for discharge. Additionally, family recovery and involvement of the patient’s parents is necessary and encouraged through multiple avenues throughout treatment.

If you or someone you know would benefit from the Young Adult Recovery Program, please call our Admissions Department at 1-800-434-7365 for a free, confidential assessment with an Admissions counselor.

Chemically dependent young adult patients at the Betty Ford Center participate in enhanced treatment activities to meet their unique development and gender needs. Research on brain development has indicated that the young adult brain continues development until approximately age 25 and younger adults have a need for engaging in activities with a perceived risk and simultaneously have a decreased ability to control impulses when compared to adults older than 25.

Young adults need increased staff supervision and monitoring for their daily structured living over and above those offered in traditional adult treatment. Young adults suffering from addiction often experience issues of delayed development. Providing enhanced treatment activities focused on developmental needs and gender differences results in increased engagement from the patient during treatment and, therefore, a greater chance for success in recovery following treatment.

Intensive Outpatient Addiction Treatment

Our Intensive Outpatient Program is designed for individuals 18 years and older seeking primary treatment for alcoholism and other drug addiction. What is Intensive Outpatient Treatment Recommended?

Pending medical and clinical assessment, Intensive Outpatient Addiction Treatment may be recommended for individuals who do not require medically supervised detoxification; live within a reasonable driving distance of the Betty Ford Center campus; and/or for those who may have completed an inpatient treatment program and are looking for additional support in early recovery.

During addiction treatment, each patient is assigned a treatment team, which includes a physician, primary counselor, family counselor, and chemical dependency technician. This team is responsible for assessing and working with each patient to establish an individualized plan of care and post treatment recommendations designed to support ongoing recovery. Upon completion of treatment, patients will possess a better understanding of the disease of addiction, and recognize the necessity and importance of Twelve Step involvement.

Addiction treatment is an intense, focused experience. Each day is filled with treatment activities including individual and group therapy sessions, as well as educational lectures, with special emphasis on issues occurring in the home and work environments. Patients are asked to attend Twelve Step meetings in the community and begin establishing a sober support system. Additionally, family members and loved ones are encouraged to participate in the Center's Family Program and Children's Program.

The Intensive Outpatient Program gives patients the opportunity to continue living at home and working in the community while attending treatment. Patients are able to begin implementing the recovery skills developed throughout the program and have the opportunity to process their experience in a safe and supportive group environment. By doing this, they begin to establish a foundation for lifelong sobriety.

The end of treatment marks the beginning of a partnership with Betty Ford Center alumni. A local and active alumni chapter is available to support patients, their family and friends in their new lives of recovery.

Programming is designed to provide long term care, beyond primary treatment. Patients participating in Intensive Outpatient Treatment may decide to continue working on their progress by joining Therapeutic Aftercare offered at Betty Ford Center as an additional step in their continuum of care. This is a non-smoking program.

Clinical Diagnostic Evaluation

The purpose of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation's multidisciplinary Clinical Diagnostic Evaluation (CDE) is to determine whether or not a person is manifesting signs and symptoms of an addictive disease and/or a co–occurring psychiatric disorder. This in depth evaluation also assesses the individual's degree of physical, social, psychological, or cognitive impairment and, if requested, evaluates the person's current suitability for returning to work in a safety-sensitive position. At the conclusion of the evaluation, appropriate continuing care or treatment options, when indicated, are reviewed and discussed with the individual.

Although the CDE Program was originally designed to evaluate licensed professionals, we welcome the opportunity to assist anyone who is concerned about their use of substances and how their substance use might be impacting their overall health and functioning. The Clinical Diagnostic Evaluation is ideal for:

  • Licensed professionals in safety-sensitive occupations. For example: physicians, nurses, EMS workers, therapists, airline pilots, aviation mechanics, police officers, attorneys, shipboard personnel;
  • Corporate executives and others working in security–sensitive positions. For example: clergy, government officials, foreign service representatives, Homeland Security personnel;
  • Alcoholics and/or addicts who have had difficulty remaining clean and sober despite their repeated best efforts;
  • Persons wishing to obtain a second opinion on the validity of a diagnosis of alcohol and/or other drug dependence assigned to them through an intervention or by some other means.

The evaluation takes place on an inpatient basis, typically three nights and four days, depending on whether or not the patient requires detox or other services which prevent active participation in the evaluation process. Admission is on Sunday and discharge on Wednesday. Nearby hotels and lodging are available at reduced rates for family members if accompanying the patient.

We prefer that the patient participates in the evaluation process with his or her significant other or a concerned family member, colleague or friend. However, if that individual is unable to participate in person, the patient, once they begin the CDE, will be asked to allow the CDE Team to conduct telephone interviews with concerned persons.

The review of collateral information is essential to the CDE process. The patient will be asked to supply the CDE Team with relevant collateral documentation such as hospital, medical and treatment records, prior psychological and psychiatric evaluations, and legal documents (e.g., police reports) during the evaluation, or ideally, prior to beginning the evaluation.

If you, or someone you might know, would benefit from a Clinical Diagnostic Evaluation, please take the next step and call our Admissions Department for further information.

Our team during the evaluation process:

  • Addiction Physician
  • Registered Nurse
  • Addiction Psychiatrist
  • Psychologist
  • Evaluation Specialist
  • CDE Coordinator

Pre-admission process:

  • Pre-admission telephone assessment
  • Extensive collateral information is gathered including prior treatment records

Medical process:

  • History & physical examination
  • Laboratory evaluation, including urine drug screen and blood panel
  • Nursing assessment

Neuro-psychological and psychiatric evaluation:

  • Psychosocial assessment (Practice/workplace/and financial evaluation where applicable)
  • Computer psychological testing (MMPI, Millon, MAST, MicroCog)
  • Face-to-face comprehensive psychological evaluation (WAIS;TAT, RD)
  • Psychiatric evaluation

Other items that may be included during the evaluation process:

  • Contact collateral Informants
  • Tour of Betty Ford Center (optional)
  • Opportunity to meet with peer professionals already in treatment

Conclusions and recommendations process:

  • Evaluation team meets with patient, S/O, and/or referent to review findings
  • One-page summary of diagnosis, findings and recommendations sent to referent (and/or patient where appropriate) within 24 hours
  • Individual reports from all testing and evaluation, including an integrated summary of findings and recommendations sent to referent within 14 days

Childrens Program

Education and Support for Children of Family Members with Addiction

We help 7 to 12-year-old children from families hurt by addiction. No child is turned away for lack of funds. Scholarships are available. All Children's Programs are open to the public. Parents do not have to be patients at any Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation treatment center in order for their children to participate in the Children's Program.

The Children's Program helps kids to positively cope with the many challenges they face. The program helps kids learn about addiction through age-appropriate activities so they realize that the disease is not their fault, they are not alone and they are not to blame. Children talk openly in a safe, supportive environment and are encouraged to express their feelings about this cunning, baffling disease.  The Children's Program is a nurturing haven of help, hope and healing.
