Premier Addiction Treatment Center in Southern California

The world-renowned Betty Ford Center for addiction treatment is located in the resort community of Rancho Mirage, California, just 20 minutes south of Palm Springs.

Established in 1982 by former first lady and outspoken recovery advocate Betty Ford, the iconic rehab center sits on a private, 20-acre campus, adjacent to the Eisenhower Medical Center. When she opened the Rancho Mirage treatment center, Betty Ford patterned the drug and alcohol rehab approach after the Hazelden Foundation's Minnesota Model of care. The approach combines multidisciplinary care for the body, mind and spirit with Twelve Step practices of mutual support. In 2014, the Betty Ford Clinic and Hazelden merged, forming the nation’s largest nonprofit addiction treatment center, the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation.

In recognizing addiction to alcohol and other drugs as a chronic disease—and recovery as a new way of living—our treatment programs are individualized, collaborative and incorporate varying levels and frequencies of care, as needed.

Rehab programs and services available at the Betty Ford Center’s Rancho Mirage campus include bio-psycho-social assessments and evaluation, medical detox, inpatient and outpatient substance abuse treatment, nearby sober living homes, education and support for families and children, and post-rehab continuing care groups.

Contact us or call 1-866-831-5700 today, and a recovery expert will help you find the right rehab program for you or a loved one. Be sure to ask us about insurance options, too.

Residential Evaluation

Substance use disorders and mental health issues often occur in tandem, which can make diagnosis and assessment challenging. With compassionate care, expert understanding and complete confidentiality, the Betty Ford Center’s multidisciplinary team of clinicians will work with you over the course of three to five days to evaluate your situation and determine the most-effective next steps for regaining your health.

The goal of our residential evaluation program is to provide you with a confidential, non-biased and comprehensive assessment, resulting in:

  • Detailed and individualized recommendations for clinical care, if appropriate
  • An individualized plan to help you return to a high-functioning and healthy life
  • A summary for your employer, licensing board, or other professional contacts, as needed

Inpatient Drug and Alcohol Rehab

Inpatient addiction treatment at the Betty Ford Center is gender-specific and tailored to meet your specific situation. Your care plan will be developed by a team of clinicians and influenced by a number of factors, including:

  • Physical health
  • Mental health
  • Gender
  • Family history
  • Types of substances used
  • Potential for relapse
  • Medical necessity

Inpatient rehab typically begins with medical detox and then follows a phased approach to care where you advance through treatment at a pace based on the inroads you’re able to make. Core treatment components include:

  • Assessment/evaluation
  • Group therapy
  • Educational lectures
  • Mental health services
  • Special-focus groups
  • Twelve Step Facilitation therapy
  • Wellness activities (fitness, yoga, tai-chi)
  • Spiritual care services
  • Individual therapy
  • Animal-assisted programming with Irish, a male Golden Retriever

Patients who have more complex addiction issues may require more time to address:

  • Co-occurring mental health complications
  • Relapse prevention
  • Sober living skills
  • Special issues and concerns

Our drug rehab facility also provides specialized treatment program options for patients diagnosed with opioid addiction, including medication-assisted treatment, as clinically appropriate.

Additionally, our special-focus addiction treatment program for health care professionals is an optimal care choice for physicians, nurses and others in the health care profession who face rehab challenges and recovery risks related to their practice. This program includes:

  • Peer group sessions with other health care professionals
  • Involvement in post-treatment therapeutic monitoring prior to discharge
  • Return-to-practice preparation and advocacy, if needed

The Rancho Mirage rehab center also offers integrated addiction treatment services for patients who also struggle with chronic pain or trauma, as well as special-focus groups for older adults and specialized programming for those who identify as LGBTQ.

Outpatient Rehab

Outpatient programs at Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation's facilities varies slightly in frequency and intensity, but an abstinence-based, Twelve Step approach built on evidence-based practices is core to all of our alcohol and drug rehab programs. Our outpatient treatment programs near Palm Springs, California, include:

Day Treatment

Whether as a direct admission into this level of treatment programming or as a step down level from a higher level of care, this intensive daily addiction treatment experience (also known as partial hospitalization) is ideal for individuals who need a less-structured environment than inpatient addiction treatment but who require more support and guidance than standard outpatient rehab.

Day treatment patients also have the option of living in a Betty Ford Clinic structured sober living home near campus. Our sober homes provide a warm and welcoming place to begin your recovery journey, with:

  • 24/7 support and accountability
  • Free time in the evenings and on weekends to strengthen sober living skills
  • Participation in Twelve Step meetings and involvement with the local recovery community

Day treatment sessions are held weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Intensive Outpatient Program

Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) is an ideal next-stage of care for patients transitioning from residential or day treatment programs. IOP is also appropriate as a first treatment experience, as clinically indicated.

IOP patients participate in 9-12 hours of addiction treatment programming a week, for a minimum of three hours a day. A typical daily session involves a 1.5-hour educational workshop and 1.5 hours of group therapy. Additional individual counseling is offered, as well.

The intensive outpatient program meets Monday-Thursday:

  • Men's group meets from noon-3:30 p.m.
  • Women's group meets from 8:15-11:30 a.m.

Sober Living

The Betty Ford Center's structured sober living homes are located near our treatment center campus. Patients participating in our outpatient programs may choose to live in our structured sober living houses because it provides a safe and supportive living environment where they can focus on developing, practicing and strengthening personal and interpersonal recovery skills.

Contact us or call 1-866-831-5700 today, and a recovery expert will help you find the right rehab program for you or a loved one. Be sure to ask us about insurance options, too.

Help and Healing for Family Members Affected by Addiction

For a disease that strikes one in ten Americans over the age of 12, addiction to alcohol and other drugs is surprisingly misunderstood by most people—including family members who are directly impacted. Our educational and support programs for families and children are designed to help family members learn about the disease of addiction, recognize how you’ve all been affected, and develop healthy new ways of coping.

Family Program

Our Family Program is an intensive, three-day program for family members ages 13 and older. Family members have the opportunity to begin working through some of the issues they’ve experienced as a result of their loved one’s alcohol or drug addiction, including how to set healthy boundaries and start building trust. Program participation is free of charge for one family member of a residential patient at the Betty Ford Clinic. Additional family members are welcome to attend for a fee.

Children's Program

The one-of-a-kind Hazelden Betty Ford Children’s Program helps kids ages 7-12 safely navigate the challenges and risks of growing up in a family with drug or alcohol addiction. This specialized program helps children and their parents/caregivers:

  • Open the lines of communication
  • Share their feelings and worries with one another
  • Heal the hurt in their relationship

The four-day Children’s Program runs from Thursday through Sunday, and is offered two to three times monthly at the Betty Ford Center’s Rancho Mirage, California, facility. There is a fee for the program, but no child is ever turned away due to inability to pay.

Recovery Management

Post-rehab services and resources at the Betty Ford Center near Palm Springs are designed to help you strengthen your sobriety, reduce the risk of relapse and make recovery a daily priority. In addition to a variety of recovery support resources and tools provided by the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation—including mobile apps, online communities, phone-based coaching and Twelve Step retreats—our Rancho Mirage rehab clinic offers counselor-facilitated continuing care groups Monday through Thursday in the evening.

"The Betty Ford Center was a place that welcomed me with open arms when my world was crashing in on me."
