What Happens in Inpatient Treatment?

Anxiety, trauma or depression and substance use often intertwine in complex ways. Our all-in-one approach integrates all areas of care to help you tackle every challenge you're facing
  • Peer Community: Once you are medically stable, you’ll join a residence hall with others in treatment who share similar diagnoses, life experiences or interests. Your housemates will become trusted peers as you navigate treatment together, including meals, lectures, wellness activities and other scheduled programming.
  • Daily Routine: Establishing new routines paves the way to sustainable change. Our residents receive support to navigate and manage healthy new routines, including how much sleep you get, how often and what you eat on a daily basis, physical activity, relaxation techniques, personal hygiene and more.
  • Educational Sessions: To be successful outside of treatment, you’ll need real-world tools. During residential treatment, you will attend daily lectures and workshops where you will hear from experts and connect with peers about how to manage stress, triggers and cravings.
  • Process Groups: Led by a trained professional, these sessions are your safe place to share and receive feedback to/from peers as you learn and apply new perspectives and coping/recovery skills.
  • One-to-One Counseling: Working privately with your addiction counselor and mental health therapist, you will gain insight, guidance and tools to address personal challenges, monitor medications or advance your treatment goals.

Which Mental Health Therapies Will Help Me Most?

Determining which mental health therapies—and what level of care—will help you most starts with navigating options that meet your specific needs, situation and strengths. Inpatient addiction treatment, sometimes called residential treatment, is the highest level of rehab services for patients diagnosed with alcohol/other drug addiction (known medically as substance use disorder) and interrelated mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression and trauma.

At Hazelden Betty Ford, your multidisciplinary care team delivers tailored, whole-person treatment that meets you where you are with the most-effective, evidence-based treatment practices, including:

  • Acceptance Commitment Therapy
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Contingency Management/Motivational Incentives
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
  • Interpersonal Therapy
  • Medication-Assisted Therapies
  • Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy
  • Motivational Enhancement Therapy
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Psychoeducational Groups
  • Solution Focused Brief Therapy/Solution Focused Therapy
  • Twelve Step Facilitation

How do I know if I need inpatient rehab for substance abuse?

First, it's important for you to know that you don't need to make this decision by yourself. Our licensed mental health and addiction professionals will walk you through the considerations and factors to identify the best level and type of treatment to meet your needs.

Your comprehensive assessment will include what's best for your overall mental health needs. Did you know that nearly 80% of people who come to us for inpatient rehab struggle with a co-occurring mental health condition along with addiction, such as depression, anxiety or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)? As a result of treatment, those patients experience significant improvements in their mental health symptoms and overall quality of life.

How can my family or loved ones be involved in my treatment?

We've built family participation and scheduled touchpoints into our residential treatment programs because we see relationships with loved ones as central to the healing process—during and after treatment.

We're here to help you and your whole family work through things together. Rebuild trust, communicate more effectively and strengthen your relationships with one another through:

  • In-person and virtual family programs
  • Support groups
  • Coaching
  • Mental health counseling
  • Mobile app/information/resources

Families don't "cause" addiction issues or other mental health conditions, but all family members, including siblings, and loved ones can be a big part of the healing process.

Does alcohol/drug rehab still take 28 days?

Personalized addiction treatment means your length of stay will be based on your specific clinical milestones. Our care team will work with you and your family—as well as your insurance provider—to come up with the best treatment plan and timetable for you. It's helpful to remember that addiction doesn't happen overnight. It's a gradual process. Recovery will take time, too. When you are discharged from inpatient treatment, you will receive a personalized plan for follow-up care and ongoing recovery support.

How much does residential addiction and mental health treatment cost?

The cost of residential/inpatient rehab programs depends on the location, level of clinical care and length of time in treatment. Hazelden Betty Ford is in-network with most insurance carriers, and most of our patients use their health insurance benefits to help cover treatment costs. Insurance policies and benefits can vary, so it's important to check with your provider about coverage specifics in your case. Our admissions team can work with you to help figure out costs too.
