Patient's Parents Say Thank You With a New Scholarship Fund "The counselors at the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation are our heroes". "There were so many pivotal moments during our son's treatment…and the counselors were always the common denominator," says Carolyn. The first such moment happened on the evening when Carolyn and her husband, Bennett, realized that their son was in far more serious trouble than they'd ever thought possible. Utterly desperate, they called the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation. "A counselor picked up the phone," Carolyn remembers. "Talking to her was like being lifted on an angel's wing. She told us just what to do, what to expect. We felt the world stand still—we would get help, there would be hope." Their son began treatment and other transformative moments soon followed. "The staff helped not only our son—but the two of us as well—to understand that despite the past, he was worthy of a bright future, a happy life," says Carolyn. A Way to Touch so Many Through Just One Person Carolyn and Bennett wanted to show their gratitude, but were searching for a giving opportunity that would have special meaning to counselors. When they learned about the Graduate School and the pressing need for scholarship funding, they knew it was the right opportunity for them. They created a scholarship fund to provide significant tuition assistance to three outstanding students. Jennifer B. is the first recipient. "Jennifer and the others will have a direct impact on the lives of so many people," says Bennett. "They are literally changing the world, one life, one family at a time." "We are so proud to help make that possible," adds Carolyn. "Counselors have a ripple effect," says Bennett. "Not just on the patients, but on their families, too. They helped us with our own recovery journey, as well as our son's. And they help so many other sons and daughters and brothers and sisters and husbands and wives."
